Yellow-footed Green Pigeon – हरियल
Treron phoenicopterus
Size: 27cm
Description: doesn’t always look that green from afar, could be confused with another pigeon species. Colourful up close, with orange-yellow neck fading into a yellow-green chest. Head and back are greyish blue and wings have purple shoulder patches. Legs are yellow, hence the name. Sexes similar. Often seen in small flocks.
Diet: generally eats fruit, particularly drupes, berries and figs. Will also eat grains, and come to ground to visit salt licks.
Song: sounds are not well documented, thought to make mellow whistles.
Breeds: March-April. Often nests in proximity to Black Drongo, an aggresssive species, perhaps to benefit from their territorial protection.
