Indian Robin - कलचुरी

Copsychus fulicatus

Size: 16cm

Description: male (above) has glossy blue-black face, chest, underparts and tail, dark brown-black crest and back, white shoulder patch, and dark red vent under base of tail. Female is brown-grey all over with the same dark red vent. Forages mainly on the ground, hopping around in an agile manner and moving from spot to spot with short flights.

Diet: mainly insects and their eggs.

Song: has several short calls including a high-pitched, squeaky jumble of 4-5 notes, uttered at intervals.

Breeds: April-June.
