Red-whiskered Bulbul - सिपाही बुलबुल

Pycnonotus jocosus

Size: 17-23cm

Description: Distinctive tall, sharply pointed black head crest often held upright and red “whiskers”, tufts of crimson feathers below eyes, help identification. Cheeks, chin, chest and belly are white; upperparts grey-brown. Sexes alike. Often seen hopping on tree branches, in shrubs, or on the ground.

Diet: Mainly fruit but is an opportunist and will eat other plant matter and invertebrates. Will swoop from a perch to catch flying insects in the air. May visit bird tables.

Song: a loud, musical whistling.

Breeds: March-July.
