Indian Grey Hornbill - धनेश

Size: 50cm

Description: long, slim, grey, prehistoric-looking bird with very large, thick bill featuring a black protrusion on the topside (hence the common name). Wings, back, face and long tail are darker grey; top of the head, chest and underparts paler silver-grey. Long neck more obvious in flight than at rest. Sexes similar though female generally smaller with bill protrusion less prominent. Often seen in pairs in trees.

Diet: mainly small fruits, particularly figs. Will also eat insects, lizards, mice and nestlings of other bird species.

Song: call is a series of high-pitched squeals.

Breeds: February and May-June.
