Common Myna - मैना
Acridotheres tristis
Size: 23-26cm
Description: the Myna’s glossy black head with its distinctive orange bare patch around the eye and orange beak stand out. The body is a rich brown, becoming paler towards the lower belly. Wings and tail are black when closed, however white patches on undertail and wings are visible in flight. Sexes alike. Often seen walking and hopping around on the ground where it forages. They roost communally (and very noisily) in large trees, often Banyans, and gather in huge numbers at dusk.
Diet: invertebrates.
Song: noisy, chattery bird, makes a huge array of sounds including mimicry.
Breeds: April-June. It has been observed in areas with high population density of parakeets that the Myna waits for parakeet chicks to fledge before occupying their nest-holes and beginning their own breeding.
